This is a report of a usability evaluation with people with disabilities of a new online ballot marking tool, commissioned by the Maryland State Board of Elections.
The research team recruited individuals with disabilities to use the online ballot delivery system and performed two rounds of testing. The first round was conducted in the University’s user research lab and included eyetracking, and the second round was conducted remotely with voters participating from a computer of their choice.
The 34 participants in the testing included people with low vision or blind, hearing impairment, limited mobility/dexterity, low literacy, mild cognitive impairment, and seniors.
The report covers the problems identified during the two rounds of testing, changes made to fix the problem, and problems that were not fixed at the end of the project. The report of both resolved and unresolved problems included screen images showing the problem, recommendations and the types of users the recommended change would benefit.
