Can the web be made accessible for people with intellectual disabilities?

Why the article is helpful

  • Defines the difference between cognitive disabilities and intellectual disabilities
  • Barriers that exist for accessibility
  • Guidelines for intellectual disabilities (ID) web accessibility

The article aimed to contribute to the social inclusion and best practices for building websites accessible for people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Unfortunately, the accessibility needs of people with ID have historically been poorly understood, and therefore overlooked, by such efforts. The authors questioned whether a fully accessible web could be built and developed guidelines for ID web accessibility because there is a lack of standardization with respect to communications systems and assistive technologies across the ID population. Barriers that exist for accessibility was also included.
